Yesterday some of the men of our church went out into the neighborhood soul winning. We had several conversations with people about Jesus Christ. We had different reactions to the gospel. Everyone we met said they were Christians or went to church. However, when we probed a bit deeper we found that none of them gave us a 'by grace through faith' answer to how you could be right with God.
I praise the Lord that we live in a country where we can go out and actively preach the gospel. There are places where it is illegal to do what we did yesterday.
One conversation really stuck in my mind from yesterday. One lady was very polite but really not interested. She explained how she was not 'over religious' but thought if you did your best you would be OK. We asked her if we could share a verse from the Bible with her.
She responded, "Absolutely not."
She talked a little more about how if you did your best you would be OK on judgment day. We then asked her if she were wrong would she want to know.
"No," was her answer.
How sad. Some people are content with their ignorance of the Bible and do not want to be confused with the truth.
I share this to encourage you in two areas.
1. Share the gospel - people are lost and need Jesus.
2. Be a diligent truth-seeker. Jesus said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31-32)
